Avenues - Summer 2005

Welcome to the summer issue of Avenues. We have been very busy here at the
Pine Street Foundation since last we wrote, including:
SEVENTH ANNUAL CHINESE MEDICAL HEALTH SCREENING
This annual educational event took place on Sunday, April 22nd, and was an
overwhelming success. Whereas a Western medical health screening might check
blood pressure and cholesterol, this Chinese medical health screening checked
pulses, looked at tongues, ears, and physiognomy, and conducted personal
interviews. Then, all of this diagnostic information was distilled into a
single summary. At the end of the screening, participants left with a personalized
report full of diagnostic information that will serve as an enduring record
of their current health status. The event was an opportunity for the public – both
those unfamiliar with Chinese medicine and those who have used it for decades – to
explore, experience, and deepen their understanding in a free, non-committal,
and relaxed atmosphere. Photos and more from the event can be found here.
AN EVENING WITH DR. T. COLIN CAMPBELL
On Wednesday, June 22nd, nearly 500 people came to learn more about the China
Study, one of the most comprehensive studies of nutrition ever conducted.
Dr. Campbell’s research findings have startling implications for diet,
weight loss, and long-term health. The lecture was facilitated by Dr. Lawrence
H. Kushi, Associate Director for Etiology and Prevention Research at Kaiser
Permanente. Click herefor more on this event.
SAN FRANCISCO MEDICINE
In April, San Francisco Medicine, the journal of the San Francisco
Medical Society, published our article about the landmark Pine Street Foundation
Survival Study. In this research project, we are addressing the question of
whether complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy in combination
with standard treatments helped extend survival in people with breast, lung,
and colon cancers. The full text of the article can be found by clicking here.
INTEGRATIVE CANCER THERAPIES
This fall, Integrative Cancer Therapies has accepted for publication
our meta-analysis that systematically and comprehensively surveys all known
studies that compared Chinese herbal medicine combined with chemotherapy to
chemotherapy alone for patients with advanced primary liver cancer. This project
follows our earlier meta-analysis work in which we analyzed studies that investigated
Chinese herbal medicine for chronic hepatitis B, which is the world’s
leading cause of primary liver cancer.
Your generosity is integral to the success of our mission and we hope you'll continue
to support our work during the coming year.
Best wishes,
Michael Broffman, LAc
Michael McCulloch, LAc, MPH
