Autumn 2006
Welcome to the autumn issue of Avenues!
NEW RESEARCH IN PROGRESS
There are several new research projects currently underway at the Pine
Street Foundation, including meta-analyses on the following topics:
extracorporeal HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) and solid tumors,
herbs on tumor growth factor receptors, and Chinese herbal formulas
and fertility. Click
here for more on these programs.
BECOMING YOUR OWN ADVOCATE
This issue of Avenues contains two new articles in our continuing Becoming
Your Own Advocate series. The first article discusses how to talk to
children about cancer diagnosis and treatment. The author, Michael
Haas, MA, MFT, writes how "explaining cancer to a child is difficult
and requires thoughtfulness, compassion, and some understanding of
how children of different ages deal with trauma." Click
here to read this article.
The second article, by Martin Rossman, MD, DipLAc, discusses the use
of guided imagery – a range of techniques from simple visualization
to direct imagery-based suggestion – by people
with cancer. He presents three brief cases that show "how guided imagery
can help people with cancer access an 'inner support system' at a time
when it is most needed." Click
here to read this article.
On behalf of the entire board, thank you for your continued generosity
and support.
Best wishes,
Michael Broffman, LAc
Michael McCulloch, LAc, MPH
